Private medical insurance - Higher vitamin D linked to higher death rates

A study conducted in Denmark showed that too much vitamin D in the blood may be associated with higher mortality.

Research at the University of Copenhagen found that getting too much of the sun vitamin may actually do more damage than getting too little, with death rates 40 percent higher in people with high levels cause.

The study was conducted by looking at blood samples from 257,774 people.

Despite the Danish findings, health experts in the United Kingdom said that the problem in this country is that too few people have sufficient vitamin D, with one in four people level so low that they are at risk of deficiency.

Vitamin D is essential for a healthy immune system and strong teeth and bones because it helps to absorb calcium.

A deficiency has been associated with a higher risk of heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Carrie Ruxton, the UK Health Supplements Information Service, also disputed the findings of the study, said previous research has shown that people with higher vitamin D levels actually lived longer.

She believes in fact that the higher mortality rates in Denmark may be linked to them on a diet of fish that contain high levels of vitamin A. contains

"'The Danes actually get more sun exposure than the British and eat lots of oily fish. Although this is healthy in moderation, including oily fish a high level of vitamin A that can be harmful and toxic substances which may have had an effect on people's health has, "she told the Daily Mail.
