IFC assisting Meghalaya government for implementation of health insurance plan

According to a statement, IFC will work with the World Bank to assist the State in the design and implementation of insurance, including the promotion of private sector participation.
The program should expand coverage for local families, enabling them to obtain quality care and specialized treatment closer to home. The project is also supported by the UK Department for International Development.
Wahlang Donald, commissioner and secretary of the state Department of Welfare of Health and Family observed, "This first of its system of its kind in India, Meghalaya will be able to extend care services health at all. In the long run it will help address the shortage of trained medical and paramedical personnel in the northeast region.
Meghalaya India had launched the national insurance scheme Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna in 2009.The project will be implemented in two phases.
In the first, the plan is to extend insurance coverage to more than 80 percent of residents are not covered by the current program of Meghalaya. The second phase will cover a wider range of diseases and tertiary health care delivery, all under the highest financial coverage.
Karin Finkelston, vice president of IFC's Asia-Pacific said: "By introducing an effective and independent mechanism to pay, the project will promote private sector participation in providing health care to the insured. Increasing the affordability of the rural poor to encourage the private sector to provide services in smaller cities and remote villages. "
"With health care costs that affect the poor steep, government-sponsored health insurance plans offer new opportunities to achieve universal coverage," said Julie McLaughlin, global head of sector for the Bank health, nutrition and population for South Asia.
This is the second intervention in healthcare by IFC in Meghalaya. IFC advised the state government in 2010 on providing quality care and training to hospital and medical college Shillong.
