Private equity all hearty about healthcare sector

Advent International, a private equity firm, will invest about Rs 520 crore ($ 105 million) in hospitals, a multi-specialty hospital chain.

Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) is investing about Rs 500 crore ($ 100 million) in Vasan Healthcare, which runs a chain of eye hospitals.

These three big investments by the private equity firms in the health of this calendar year indicate the growing importance of this sector for PE and venture capital firms.

If a patient pays Rs 500 for a consultation in a subway, a semi-urban or rural area will be willing to pay much less than that. The solution is in their care without investing too much precious material or attempt to treat all diseases.

Glocal's model for hospitals to have about 50 beds each, an investment of Rs 3-4 crore would require. Investments, says Dr. Azim is not so hard, it's operating expenditure that strains a company such as theirs. Household spending each year, he says, was almost the same as investments.
